Wigan did not score until nine minutes from time, but a converted try, penalty and drop goal sealed their first victory at Emerald Headingley since 2012.

McDermott made no effort to hide his feelings after the game, claiming his side were “dopey”in the final 10 minutes.

He fumed: “It was a very boring game, error-ridden and not much from either team in attack.

“The quality of the game was not great, but defensively both teams showed some steel.

“I thought we were great defensively and shut down what they threw at us for the majority of the game, but then we went 8-0 up and we stuck our head up our backsides and didn’t pull it out.

“We played crazy, defended different and started to back off.

“Until we went 8-0 up I thought we were very good.”

Rhinos would have gone above Wigan into second place in the Betfred Super League table if they had been able to hang on.

McDermott added: “It is really disappointing.

“Next time we are in that situation we have to be better at it.

“It hurts at the moment, but we will be in another tight game soon and we have to use that loss to improve.”
