Sutcliffe suffered a knee injury in last Friday’s First Utility Super League win over Hull and scans have diagnosed anterior cruciate ligament damage.

The 20-year-old will undergo surgery next Thursday and coach Brian McDermott said: “It is desperately disappointing news for Liam, especially given the form he has been in this season.

“He will get the best-possible treatment from our medical team and I am sure he will return next season stronger for the experience.”

Half-back Danny McGuire (ankle) and prop Adam Cuthbertson (calf) have also been ruled out of tonight’s Challenge Cup quarter-final at Hull after being hurt last week.

Brett Delaney returned from injury and Robbie Ward and Andy Yates were drafted in among the substitutes.

Mark Minichiello was passed fit for Hull, but Setaimata Sa was a late withdrawal due to injury, so Steve Michaels came into the right-centre.
