FORMER Leeds Rhinos star Lee Smith has joined Newcastle Rugby Union Club.

As revealed by the Yorkshire Evening Post last week, Wildcats have agreed to release Smith - who had a previous spell in union with Wasps - from the remainder of his contract and there will be no transfer fee.

Smith has joined Newcastle Falcons until the end of the 2014-15 campaign, having spent 18 months with the Wildcats.

Initially joining on loan from Leeds Rhinos, Smith signed a full-time deal for 2013 and scored 14 tries and 57 goals in 33 Super League appearances.

Smith commented: “I’d like to thank [Wildcats chairman] Michael Carter and the club for agreeing to release me from the remainder of my contract to take up this opportunity.

“I’m honoured to have played for a great club over the past 18 months and thank Richard Agar and his coaching staff for all they’ve done for me during my time at Wakefield.

“The fans have been good to me and finally, I’d like to thank all the players for making the last 18 months really enjoyable. I’ve come into the club with a smile on my face every day and that means a lot.”

A Wakefield statement said: “The club thank Lee for his efforts at the Wildcats and wish him well in his new challenge.”
