Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors: Tomkins tipping Warriors to side-step another fright night at Headingley

Tonight’s visitors have lost their last five games at Leeds Rhinos, where their most recent win was a 50-8 success on June 1, 2012.

Tomkins, who was playing rugby union five years ago, admitted a good night for Wigan at Headingley is long overdue.

“The thing about this game is Leeds play well against us,” he said. “Even when they were struggling last year it was still a massive game.

“They are always massive games – when we’ve gone there and we’ve been on a high and they’ve been on a low, you’d think it was one versus two in the table. I don’t know why. I like playing at Headingley, their fans are good, we take some good supporters, it’s an old-fashioned stadium and there’s a great energy.”

In contrast, Wigan have been dominant at their own DW Stadium and in the sides’ meetings at the Magic Weekend. Tomkins said: “They’re very good at home and we’ve built Magic up and we always turn up for that, we treat it like a final and put a bit more emphasis on it.

“They play really well at home and that’s why the games turn out as they do.”

Tomkins missed the second half of last season following surgery on both knees, but is happy with his comeback.

“I’m just pleased my knees are feeling okay,” he said. “I’m putting some minutes and games together. I’m in a good place injury-wise and I am looking forward to a good season.”
