Leeds Rhinos take steps to improve matchday operation for Super League opener

Leeds Rhinos are appealing for “cooperation” from fans at this weekend’s Betfred Super League round one double-header.

With fewer than 1,000 tickets remaining, Emerald Headingley is set for a second successive sell-out, following Jamie Jones-Buchanan’s testimonial game two weeks ago.

The 19,000 crowd that day led to some complaints of overcrowding on the South Stand terrace and Rhinos say they are “taking steps” to avoid similar problems on Sunday when Castleford Tigers take on Toronto Wolfpack before Rhinos’ clash with Hull.

A Rhinos’ statement admitted: “We are aware a number of supporters felt the standard [for the previous game] fell below what they usually expect at Emerald Headingley Stadium.

"The capacity for all areas of the stadium are independently set and we strictly observe those capacities when selling tickets for events at the stadium.

“A key element of our matchday operation is the cooperation of supporters to work with our safety team and listen to the instructions they are given.

"This includes having your ticket ready for inspection when entering the stand and moving from access that must be kept clear for the comfort and safety of all spectators.

"Failure to comply with the instructions of the safety team could result in ejection from the stadium.

"Steps will be taken this Sunday for the opening game of the new Betfred Super League season to improve our operation and we would value feedback from supporters afterwards on their views of the enhanced process.”

Stadium safety officer David Dowse added: “The situation in the South Stand at the Bradford Bulls game was being constantly monitored and it was agreed, given the nature of the event, spectators who refused to move would not be dealt with by force.

"This would have changed if there had been an emergency or medical situation. We would ask all spectators to work with our safety team to make every matchday as enjoyable an experience as possible for everyone.”
