Leeds Rhinos: Response a step in right direction reckons Rob

The veteran half-back/hooker scored one of Rhinos’ seven tries, just eight days after a record 66-10 loss away to Castleford Tigers.

Burrow described the Castleford game – which he missed through illness – as “heartbreaking”, but reckons Rhinos have put that firmly behind them.

“After something like that you need a response,” Burrow said. “A win’s a response, but to win in that fashion against a team that had been unbeaten this year was really pleasing.

“We aren’t getting carried away, but it was nice to respond like that and it takes the pressure off a little bit.”

The win over Catalans was Rhinos’ highest score against a Super League side since August, 2015.

Leeds, who are now fourth in Betfred Super League, had scored only 51 points in their previous four games, but Burrow reckons last week’s display proved their attack does work.

“It is frustrating,” he conceded. “It is a confidence thing. When your attack is not firing you try too hard and then it doesn’t get better.

“But I think the Cas game, in a way, has been a bit of a reset button. We said ‘we really need to address this quickly, because it’s not good enough’.

“We had a good week’s training, we put a few little plays and structures in place and I thought that showed on Friday.

“I think Catalans were out on their feet at the end and that probably played a part, but we’ve got our confidence back and now we can focus on the next game.”

Wakefield Trinity visit Headingley in three days’ time and Burrow predicted Rhinos will need to improve again to beat a team who are on a two-match winning run and growing in belief themselves.

“It’s too competitive to rest on your laurels,” he said.

“When I first started you could probably be a bit below your best and still get a win, but you can’t now, you need to back it up.

“That’s why this week is a really exciting game – anybody can beat anybody.

“Wakefield are a good team and they’ll be confident from last year when they came here and beat us in the last minute.

“It is an important game and it’s going to be tough.”

Burrow said he was unaware of chief executive Gary Hetherington’s email to fans last week which indicated a judgement will be made on Rhinos’ players and coaching staff at the end of this month.

But he insisted: “It is too good a club to be having results like the one at Castleford.

“Last year was a terrible season and we can’t have another one like that.

“Players, coaches and staff all have to have a look at themselves, but I think that [last Friday] was a step in the right direction.”
