Leeds Rhinos: Mullally returns with a try as young Rhinos see of Doncaster

Mullally was signed from Huddersfield Giants last year, but suffered a leg injury making his first appearance for Leeds in their exhibition game against New Zealand in October. He was among Rhinos’ substitutes and under-19s coach Chris Plume said: “He came through unscathed and scored one try and set up another, which was pleasing.”

Plume was happy with the way his young players coped against more experienced opponents. He added: “They threw some good stuff at us and had plenty of good attacking opportunities. Louis Sheriff was very good for them, but our young fellas were tough and resilient. It was a really good game, to and fro between two teams who wanted to throw the ball around and attack.”

Plume praised the contribution of England academy half-back Jack Wray, who scored a try and kicked a penalty and conversion and also praised second-row Cameron Smith and substitute centre Nathan Waring.

Rhinos’ other try scorers were Tommy Brierley and Jack Walker and Joe Sanderson kicked three goals.

Rhinos also gave game time to full-back Ashton Golding and back-rower Josh Walters from their first team squad.

Ben Frankland, Kieran Cross and Sheriff scored Doncaster’s tries.

Tom Carr kicked two goals and Jordie Hedges landed one.

Doncaster’s side featured several former Rhinos academy players including Frankland, Jordan Harper, George Milton and Brad England, as well as Aaron Jones-Bishop, who is a Milford Marlins product.

Meanwhile, Rhinos’ Ash Handley, Jordan Baldwinson and Mitch Achurch played on dual-registration for Featherstone Rovers in yesterday’s Championship defeat at Bradford Bulls.
