Leeds Rhinos in focus – spotlight on Rob Lui

WHEN RELEGATION from Super League looked a real possibility midway through last year, Leeds Rhinos made some key changes to their squad, including swapping stand-off Tui Lolohea for Salford Red Devils’ Rob Lui.

The Australian made his debut in a crucial win over Catalans Dragons at the end of June and is ever-present in Leeds’ 15 games since he joined the club, scoring four tries.

Here we assess his likely contribution when Rhinos restart their Betfred Super League campaign against Huddersfield Giants in 13 days’ time.

Lui, who played 89 times in the NRL for Wests Tigers and North Queensland, proved at Salford he can be a match-winner on his day.

He is a specialist stand-off, which Leeds were lacking before he signed and his running game can damage most defences.

His style complements half-back partner Luke Gale’s and the duo were beginning to form an impressive attacking combination before the Covid-19 break.

Lui had an outstanding game for Rhinos when they beat Warrington Wolves in their final match of last season, creating their opening try with a long-range interception and scoring the second.

Lui was in good form for Salford last year before the move to Headingley, scoring seven tries in 20 appearances and helping set them on the road to Old Trafford.

Concerns:

The 30-year-old pivot is yet to totally find his feet at Leeds and has tended to drift in and out of games at times, but Rhinos have won 10 of their 15 fixtures with him in the side, so he is making a positive contribution.

Value:

Lui was a swimming pool lifeguard before making his NRL debut for Wests Tigers in 2009 and Leeds splashed out a cash fee plus their previous number six Tui Lolohea to prise him away from Salford,

He signed a two-year deal, with an option for another season and Leeds’ management clearly see him as a crucial part of the jigsaw as they attempt to build a team capable of winning silverware following recent poor campaigns.
