Leeds Rhinos: Composure the key to beating Leeds '“ Betts

Widnes got off to a winning start at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last week, but Betts feels they will need to improve to repeat their 2015 home win over Rhinos.

“We’ve had a chat about a couple of things that were missing against Wakefield,” Betts said ahead of this weekend’s First Utility Super League round two clash.

“We had loads of effort, endeavour and spirit, but we lacked composure and accuracy in both attack and defence.

“We need to show that ability to maintain pressure and put them in a position they don’t want to be.

“We also felt we should have taken a few more of the chances we created.”

Betts is an admirer of Rhinos’ style of play and knows his team will be tested, despite Leeds’ loss to Warrington in their opening game.

He said: “If you know anything about skill acquisition and how to develop a pattern of play, you’ll know that what looks frenetic is practiced.

“Some of the best ad-lib stuff in the world is practiced and I think that’s what Leeds do; they practice the way they play.

“It may look off-the-cuff, but people don’t just turn up in the right place time and again by accident.

“They’re constantly trying to put you on the back foot so they can give the likes of Briscoe, Hall, Hardaker, Moon and Burrow opportunities to show what they can do.

“You need to stay on your toes, stay connected defensively and know how you’re going to respond when they offload the ball.”
