Rhinos remain seventh, but are now just a point clear of Huddersfield Giants and Catalans who hit back from 24-10 down at half-time to win 28-25 at Emerald Headingley tonight.

Leeds, who were without 12 senior players, are in real danger of finishing in the bottom-four and McDermott said: “It’s a worry, of course, but I’ve been saying most weeks when we have more of a regular team we’ll be good.

“The anxiety we had two years ago about being in the bottom-four isn’t there at the moment.

“I understand the supporters and everyone are concerned, but my message is ‘we are in good shape’.”

Of last night’s performance, McDermott said: “I’m pleased on a fair few levels. After the spike of enthusiasm against St Helens the challenge was to get up there again and we did.

“I thought in the first half we were really good. Our energy levels dropped in the second half.

Catalans coach Steve McNamara was asked in his post-match press conference about abuse aimed at him by spectators in the second half.

He insisted: “It’s an emotional game. The Leeds fans aren’t happy at the moment and they certainly weren’t happy with us. I have no issue with that.”
