Hunslet Hawks 48 Oxford 6: Familiar tale as Hawks March to fourth win against Oxford

GOALKICKING duo David March and Tommy Coyle achieved a 100 per cent success rate as the Hawks ran in eight tries and defeated Oxford for the fourth time this season.

The pair kicked four goals each and March also crossed for a smart try direct from a play-the -ball as his experience told. As coach Barry Eaton remarked afterwards, Oxford must be sick of the sight of the Hawks who have now amassed 194 points against them this season while conceding just 44.

Winger Gavin Duffy, on loan from Keighley until the end of the season, snatched two tries on his home debut and half-back Danny Grimshaw also collected a brace as the Hawks shrugged off the absence through injury of influential pair Liam Hood and James Coyle.

Oxford were pedestrian by comparison, especially when close to the opposition’s line, and they had to be content with a try by full back Sean Morris, improved by Jimmy Rowland, 14 minutes into the second half.

Chris Clarkson, who opened the scoring after eight minutes, Liam Mackay and Jimmy Watson joined in the Hawks’ try spree but Eaton was delighted with his goal-kicking pair. He said: “Andy Ballard has been a really good kicker for us but he is unavailable for a week or two and the lads who have taken on the job have done so well.

“We have been hampered by injuries and fixture gaps, which have affected our momentum, but now we have five games on the bounce so hopefully we can benefit.”
