IT took a try three minutes from time by Ryan Fieldhouse to finally end Hunslet RLFC’s resistance in a fiery 28-20 defeat at Barrow yesterday.
Hunslet, led by new head coach Gary Thornton, held a six-point advantage at half-time but the home side had the better of the second half in which tempers boiled over and the visitors had Sean Hesketh sent off and George Flanagan sin-binned late on.
Barrow made a strong start but could not covert their chances and Hunslet punished the hosts on eight minutes. A charge from Mufaro Mvududu saw him held up short, but the ball was moved to prop Hesketh, who crashed over. Danny Ansell was unable to convert as his kick hit the post.
Eze Harper hit back for the hosts on 16 minutes when he dived under the posts to score a try which Lewis Charnock converted.
Hunslet’s Jimmy Watson then raced away following an interception and set up Ansell to score. Ansell added the extras to give the visitors a 10-6 lead.
Ansell then converted a penalty in front of the posts to make it 12-6 to the visitors but Watson spilled the kick-off and Jamie Dallimore followed up to collect and score. Charnock added the extras to make it 12-12.
Hunslet took the lead again three minutes before half-time. After a long spell of pressure hooker Flanagan crashed over the line to score and Ansell converted to give Hunslet a 18-12 half-time lead.
Barrow looked revitalised at the start of the second half and got back on level terms when a chip-kick from Dallimore was chased down by Fieldhouse for a try which Charnock converted.
Ansell and Charnock then exchanged penalties, with a second from the latter edging the Raiders ahead. Hesketh’s high shot on Martin Aspinwall then led to a brawl and Hesketh was shown the red card.
Then with three minutes to play Fieldhouse grabbed the final try of the match for the hosts. A brawl in the aftermath of the try led to Flanagan receiving a yellow card.
