Four-try Morton the hero as Dewsbury put the Knights to flight

Glenn Morrison’s Championship side had trailed 16-10 to the League One visitors on a wet night at Rams Stadium, but managed to prevent them from scoring in the second period to book their place in the next round, when the sport’s big guns join the competition.

Jack Teanby’s try opened the scoring for Dewsbury on 16 minutes with Morton getting his first touchdown three minutes later, both efforts being converted by James Glover.

York replied with touchdowns from Richard Wilkinson, Kristian Brining and former Dewsbury wingman Austin Buchanan, with Danny Nicklas converting the latter two.

But the second half belonged to former Wakefield flier Morton, who crossed in the 41st, 66th and 76th minutes, with Glover booting two goals to secure Dewsbury’s passage.

Oldham coach Scott Naylor is hoping his part-timers can take advantage of Hull KR’s fragility as they seek to pull off an upset in the fifth round of the Cup at the KC Lightstream Stadium today.

He said: “We have beaten Championship teams and at the weekend we beat a full-time team, so the next thing is to beat a Super League team.”

“It will be an enormous challenge but Hull KR will probably be a bit low on confidence.

“In the Championship, we knew the level we’d have to play at is far more intense than League 1 but my lads are getting used to that now.

“Now we’re playing against a Super League team and obviously Hull KR will be big favourites for it but it’s about us performing at the same level we’ve been performing at in the last few weeks.”

Hull KR’s interim head coach James Webster has named his strongest available squad, which includes forward James Donaldson making his return from a wrist injury sustained in the opening game of the season, but Mitch Allgood, Graeme Horne and Thomas Minns have joined his club’s casualty list.

The Sky cameras will be at Mount Pleasant on Saturday for the all-Championship clash between John Kear’s Batley and Featherstone while Toulouse, unbeaten in League 1, will get an opportunity to gauge their promotion credentials when they host Leigh.
