FORMER AUSTRALIA Test player Reni Maitua is set to make his long-awaited debut for Featherstone Rovers today.
The 32-year-old, who signed for Rovers before Christmas but was delayed in Australia as he awaited a visa, arrived on Saturday and has been named in the 19-man squad for the visit of Sheffield Eagles in the Kingstone Press Champsionship (kick-off 6pm).
Maitua, who can play centre, in the halves, hooker or loose-forward, made 174 appearances in the NRL for Canterbury, Cronulla and Parramatta.
He has also played three times for Samoa and once for Australia. His arrival is a massive boost for Rovers, who are sixth in the Kingstone Press Championship following Friday’s 24-8 home loss to London Broncos.
Rovers’ three defeats this year have all been at home and another loss would be a major setback to their top-four hopes.
Meanwhile, former Wakefield winger Peter Fox has signed for Championship basement side Doncaster, coached by former Hull KR team-mate Paul Cooke.
The 30-year-old had been linked with a move to hometown club York following his release by Halifax.
