Dewsbury Rams: Kelly calls for more player protection

DEWSBURY RAMS coach Neil Kelly has called for players to receive more protection after they have released the ball.

Kelly – whose side play host to Swinton Lions in the Betfred Championship tomorrow (3pm) – said: “I’ve noticed in a lot of games this year hitting the player after the ball has gone has become the norm.

“I don’t like that. Players should be allowed to take it to the line without fear of going into too much contact.

“It is rugby league, it’s not a soft man’s game, but once you get to the line and offload, as long as you look after yourself, you should be fairly comfortable you’re not going to get hit too hard.”

Rams are aiming for a second win in six days after Monday’s 38-6 success at Rochdale Hornets.

“We’re relatively pleased with the start we’ve made,” Kelly said.

“We’ve won two out of three and can see where we could have won the third.

“That was not to be, but the lessons learned contributed to the win on Monday.

“If we go three from four, that will be a decent start.”
