Despite the threat of the disease, rugby league is one of the few sports still playing although that could end today when Super League clubs meet in Huddersfield to discuss whether to halt proceedings.

Castleford produced an impressive performance as they defeated champions St Helens 28-14 yesterday, hastily arranged to be televised live by Sky Sports given they have little else to broadcast. Powell said: “Everybody understands it’s a really difficult decision at the moment for the whole country, the whole world.

“You look around and it’s such a confused scenario. Obviously there will be some meetings in the next few days that will give us an indication of what’s happening and then we can plan within our organisation what we are going to do.

“But it’s pretty tough at the moment. There’s an eerie feeling around everywhere. It will be the same for everybody.

“Nobody knows where it’s going to take us over the next weeks and months.”

The Government could ban mass gatherings as early as this weekend which would force rugby league’s hand – although they may be able to squeeze one more round in beforehand.

Clearly, clubs are worried about their financial stability if forced to play behind closed doors. But RFL chief executive Ralph Rimmer said: “I won’t pre-empt any decision from the Government.

“Some messages have been confusing and others very straightforward and we’ve adhered to the guidelines.

“At this moment in time the games are on.”

Late last night, Super League newcomers Toronto Wolfpack announced they have suspended training and stood down their entire UK-based staff after four players experienced symptoms of coronavirus. Head coach Brian McDermott said: “We take this very seriously.”
