Chester is driving up Wildcats' self-belief

That’s the view of coach Chris Chester who will take charge for the first time when Wildcats, who have lost their last four games, play host to fellow strugglers Huddersfield Giants today.

“I am happy with the squad we’ve got available and I’m looking forward to the Easter period,” Chester said.

“We have just got to turn effort into points. There was plenty of effort last weekend against Hull FC and we were in the game for large parts of it.

“We just lacked a bit of execution with the ball, but the effort was there. The guys need to start believing in themselves a bit more, but we feel we aren’t far away. We feel a win is just around the corner and we are going into this game really positive. If we turn up with the same effort and commitment we had last Friday it will go a long way towards us getting a result.”

Huddersfield are second from bottom in the table, above Wildcats only on points difference and both sides have won just once this year.

Chester stressed at this stage he has to focus on his own team’s performance, rather than what the opposition might do.

“We know Huddersfield’s strengths,” he said. “They’ve been a top-four side for the last few years, but it is a bit of fine-tuning with ourselves more than anything. We are trying to build confidence from what we are doing in training.”

Scott Moore is set to make his first appearance of the season today and Danny Kirmond could also return from injury, along with Ben Jones-Bishop and Reece Lyne.

Anthony England and Anthony Walker drop out from the team beaten 22-4 at Hull.

Chester said: “I look at the squad and we’ve got 28 or 29 fit players. Not many teams can say that at this time of year.

“We have got quite a fit and healthy squad to pick from and we’ve potentially got a few coming back over the Easter period.

“I just feel we are lacking a bit of quality in certain areas. We will look at trying to bring somebody in, but, if it’s someone from overseas, that’s a long, drawn-out process.”

Of his first week in charge, the former Hull KR boss added: “I am really enjoying it. It has certainly cut down on my petrol bill. I ring home just as I’m setting off and before it was an hour and 10 minutes – and now it’s 10 minutes.

“There’s a lot of good people down here and a lot of volunteers, which typifies what this club is all about.”
