Castleford Tigers women are ready to roar

Castleford Tigers will join the Women's Super League party when they visit York City Knights Ladies on Sunday.

With seven teams in the league each side is forced to take a bye week and for the Tigresses this meant missing what proved to be an historic opening weekend.

The Castleford outfit are now gearing up for their own opener and head coach Lindsay Anfield said: “The first game of the season has been a long time coming for us.

“The girls are more than prepared to start the season and are looking forward to getting out on the park.”

With a number of new players in the squad, Anfield believes they have had enough time to settle and is looking forward to seeing what some of her younger players have to offer.

She said: “After a comprehensive pre-season, the multitude of new players have settled in well and the team is gelling nicely. As a very young group, they are nervous about the amount of attention the WSL is attracting, but excited to be part of it and show what they can do.”

One of those new signings is Paige Costello who joined Castleford following a spell with Thatto Heath St Helens.

She has been impressed with the amount of coverage the women’s game has received lately and said: “The support for the women’s game at the moment is unreal.

“As a squad I can say that we are extremely excited for the season and have prepared consistently during pre-season.”

There has only been one previous competitive clash between York and Castleford which took place last season in the quarter-finals of the Yorkshire County Cup.

On that day it was the Tigresses who won 8-16 and went on to lift the trophy a month later.

However, this is going to be the first clash between these sides in the Women’s Super League after York entered the division following a spell in the Merit league.

Castleford, on the other hand, were part of the first ever Super League last season and are preparing for their second season in the competition.
