Castleford Tigers 28 St Helens 14 - Danny Richardson shines against former club ...

They moved joint-top of Super League with a 28-14 success, their fifth win of the season.

“I thought the performance was outstanding, particularly the first half,” he said. “Everything we talked about from plan perspective the boys delivered.

“The second half they were always going to come back a bit and we had a couple of tough periods but we handled it pretty well.

“I’m delighted.”

Scrum-half Danny Richardson earned man-of-the-match as he faced his former team for the first time since leaving at the end of last season. He fell out of favour as Saints surged to the Grand Final back then but he excelled yesterday as Castleford continually reaped rewards down his right side.

Powell insisted it was not a specific tactic but added: “Obviously in terms of their centre there, it’s changed a bit over the last few weeks.

“(Jack) Welsby was in who’s been playing a fair bit of full-back and I just thought we attacked really effectively there.

“Obviously Danny Richardson was keen for a big game today and he delivered that while Jordan (Rankin) and the positioning of Pete (Mata’utia) was excellent.

“We caused them some trouble.”

Castleford are due to visit Salford Red Devils on Friday although Super League could soon come to a halt due to coronavirus.

Powell added: “Today, on both sides of the ball we were excellent.

“Defensively was a big step up for us. We went after their big guns and did a great job.

“But we played our way with the ball and were dangerous. We’ve been trying to find that for a while.”
