Bramald to investigate move from game plan

HUNSLET HAWKS picked up two injuries in their iPro Sport Cup defeat to York City Knights.

The 24-4 home loss came in Hawks’ first competitive game of the season and Liam Mackay and Lee Waterman are both in doubt for Sunday’s visit of Barrow Raiders in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

Coach Matt Bramald said: “Liam got a shoulder injury.

“He is being assessed, but it looked pretty nasty at the time.

“He felt a crunch and a crack – not necessarily to the bone, but it could be muscular.”

Waterman went to hospital after taking a bang to the head.

“He had a scan and got the all-clear,” Bramald said.

“He needs a bit of rest and he will do a cog’ sport test.

“Hopefully he will be okay if not for this week, then the week after.”

Bramald described the game and his side’s performance as “ugly”, despite a huge individual effort from hooker George Flanagan.

“We turned too much ball over,” the coach admitted.

“Our completion rate was about 50 per cent.

“If you turn the ball over to the opposition once every two times you have it you are going to have to do a lot of defending.

“That was the big reason why we didn’t finish strongly and we fell away in the last 20.”

Bramald added: “The big down side was we had a game plan and a way we wanted to play and for whatever reason, we didn’t follow it.

“It wasn’t the conditions – it was a simple plan we could have carried out in any conditions.

“We didn’t get anywhere near that so I need to get to the bottom of what was going on there.”
