LOAN SIGNING Chris Ulugia is facing a spell on the sidelines after being hurt during his Batley Bulldogs debut.

Coach John Kear said Ulugia, a winger or centre brought in from Bradford Bulls until the end of the season, sustained shoulder damage in the 25-22 defeat at Halifax two days ago and will undergo a scan on Friday

“He only lasted 17 or 18 minutes,” Kear said.

“It is a little disappointing.”

Kear was happier with his team’s performance. He added: “We played very well, it was a really good game. Both teams threw a lot at each other and both defended well. It was nip and tuck and unfortunately we just came out on the wrong side of the ledger.”

Kear felt one of Halifax’s tries was “controversial” and he said: “What was most galling was that they had a conversion given when all the players and even the photographers behind the posts thought it had missed.

“Scott Murrell then took a drop goal, which I am sure he would not have done if the difference had been four rather than six. But the main thing is we played well and we will take great heart and confidence from it.”

Joe Chandler suffered a broken nose early in the game and Kear admitted: “We had some adversity, but we came through it and we can take heart from that.”
