BATLEY BULLDOGS will be playing for pride when they take on visitors Whitehaven in the Kingstone Press Championship Shield tomorrow (3pm).

Bulldogs are sixth in the table, two places and five points behind Workington Town, who hold the final play-offs spot.

Batley were beaten 28-26 at Featherstone Rovers on Monday after leading 26-6 with less than 10 minutes remaining. Rovers’ winning try came after the hooter had sounded and Bulldogs coach John Kear conceded: “I think the top-four is beyond us now.

“We are five points down on Workington with three games left and I think they will pick up at least one win. Mathematically it is possible, but realistically I don’t think it is.”

Bulldogs are two points clear of the relegation zone and Kear added: “We want to finish off with three wins. We have got two home games – against Whitehaven and Hunslet – and we finish off with a trip to London, who are beset with injuries at the moment.

“We want to finish the season on as positive a note as possible.”
