NEW SIGNING from Hunslet Hawks Elliot Cosgrove will make his debut for Batley Bulldogs at home to Sheffield Eagles tonight (7.30pm).
Cosgrove joined Hunslet in the off-season, but made only three appearances, scoring one try, before being released on Wednesday.
He immediately joined Bulldogs and boss John Kear said: “He will play (tonight).
“We signed him at training on Wednesday, he is registered with the RFL and he will play in the centre.”
Kear added: “He has been at Dewsbury and Keighley and then signed for Hunslet.
“When he went there I inquired about him, but he was offered quite a good deal there.
“It has not worked out for him and I am really pleased to have got him here.
“He has played for Ireland about 10 times so he has got the experience and I think he has got the potential to be a really good, high-end Championship centre.”
Cosgrove will have a baptism of fire against Eagles’ in-form centre Menzie Yere.
“They are a good team, no doubt about that,” said Kear of tonight’s visitors. “We are on a tough trot. We’ve had Dewsbury and Featherstone, it’s Sheffield next and then London and Leigh.
“We get a bit of respite against Whitehaven, then it’s Bradford - so most of our next few games are against full-time teams or teams challenging for the top-four.”
Bulldogs have slipped to ninth in the Kingstone Press Championship, but Kear hopes home form could boost them up the ladder.
“Our last home game was on May 3 against Whitehaven,” he pointed out. “We’ve been away for more than a month. It is a long time since we’ve played at home, but now we’ve got three home game in nine days.
“It’s nice to come home and we’ve got to make sure we play better in front of our own fans.”
