Bulldogs, who play host to Oldham tomorrow (3pm), have made an indifferent start in the Kingstone Press Championship and are seventh with three wins from their opening six matches.

But they won 34-16 at high-flying Toulouse Olympique in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup last Saturday and Diskin – who took charge last autumn – said: “We need to be confident this week and deserve to be. We had a good win. In the week we summarised the first six games and where we needed to improve and we made a positive step towards that. We need to carry that forward into the Oldham game now.”

Diskin admitted lack of consistency has been a problem for Bulldogs after last year’s third-placed finish. He added: “There was always going to be a transition period.

“The success they had last year was fantastic and it was foreign to some of the players. You have to work really hard to achieve it, but you have to work three or four times harder to maintain it.

“That has taken a while to sink in, but hopefully they’ve grasped that now and we’ve got back to doing the simple stuff really well.”

Oldham are eighth and Diskin said: “They will have noted our inconsistency and fancy their chances. They are tough and aggressive and we need to meet that and go one better.”
