MORLEY’S Dan Cammish made a stunning start to 2020 British Touring Car Championship with victory in the first race at Donington Park yesterday.

Cammish heartbreakingly missed out on lifting the 2019 crown after suffering brake failure on the final lap of the final race of the season – but he put that disappointment behind him with a dominant display in the season opener following a superb overtaking manoeuvre on lap four.

After initially falling behind former champion Ash Sutton and defending champion Colin Turkington, Cammish took advantage when the pair briefly touched while jostling for top spot and the Halfords Yuasa Racing driver took his chance to sneak past both of them to claim the lead – a position he held until the chequered flag.

Speaking after the race, Cammish admitted that his double overtake was key to his victory.

“It was a really brave move for Ash to go around the outside of Colin up the hill and he made it stick,” said Cammish. “Once he opened the corner up for himself I think he forgot about me!

“I just drove into the gap and he tried to squeeze me across and I thought ‘not today, I’m not having it!’ and hung onto it!”

Starting from pole in the second race, Cammish struggled with his ballast-laden Honda Civic and slipped down the field to eventually finish in sixth place.

The chequered flag was taken by Team BMW’s Turkington who added victory to his second-place finish in the first race. Motorbase Performance’s Rory Butcher claimed his second podium finish of the day in second spot.

Cammish managed seventh place in the final race of the day which was won by Sutton, to leave the Yorkshireman in second place in the overall standings.
