Ashley Hugill ends ‘long wait’ for victory in Scottish Open

ASHLEY HUGILL reckons keeping things simple ended his ‘long wait’ for a ranking event victory after thrashing Farakh Ajaib in the first round of the Scottish Open.

The York potter breezed past the world No.117 4-0 as fluent breaks of 131 and 96 booked a last 64 clash against Robert Milkins on Wednesday.

Hugill, ranked nine places below Ajaib, had yet to win a match this season and the jubilant 26-year-old said: “I’m definitely happy to get off the mark – I managed to actually get my practice game onto the match table and I thought I played really well.

“I think it might have just been that I wasn’t overthinking. It feels like it’s been a long wait. Now, hopefully I can get a bit of confidence from that.”

Leeds’ Oliver Lines went down 4-2 against world No.16 Jack Lisowski in the early hours of Tuesday morning after the Monday schedule was thrown into disarray by delayed coronavirus test results.

Elsewhere, David Grace lost 4-1 to Shaun Murphy and Pickering’s Paul Davison lost 4-2 against Robbie Williams.
