It was a case of so close yet so far at the sailing and, here, we round up the British action from around Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday and look ahead to today’s action:

* Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark’s Olympic gold is on hold after light winds led to the postponement of the women’s 470 medal race. The British duo merely have to complete the double-point finale without disqualification to top the podium. The pair, along with the men’s 470 duo of Luke Patience and Chris Grube, will now finish their regatta on today.

* Mo Farah kept his bid for a fourth Olympic title on track as he coasted into the final of the 5,000m, coming home in third place after surviving a stumble. Andy Butchart will join him after qualifying on a day when Dina Asher-Smith finished fifth in the women’s 200m final. Adam Gemili is through to the men’s 200m showdown thanks to a fastest loser spot in the semi-finals, where Danny Talbot’s personal best of 20.25 seconds was not quite enough. Cindy Ofili just missed out on a 100m hurdles medal, finishing fourth, with sister Tiffany Porter in seventh place.

* Great Britain are through to the Olympic women’s hockey final for the first time. They surpassed bronze medal successes, at Barcelona 24 years ago and London 2012, by beating semi-final opponents New Zealand 3-0 thanks to an Alex Danson double and Helen Richardson-Walsh’s penalty strike. Holland, looking to seal a hat-trick of Games titles, await in Friday’s final.

* British show-jumpers Nick Skelton and Ben Maher both qualified for Friday’s individual Olympic final. Skelton collected five faults on Big Star around a huge course in searing heat, while his London 2012 team gold medal-winning colleague Maher picked up just one time fault aboard Tic Tac. The top 35 combinations after Wednesday’s jumping go again on Friday morning, with the leading 20 after that contesting medals.

* Charley Hull boosted Britain’s hopes of a golden double in golf’s return to the Olympics by carding an opening 68. After Justin Rose won the first gold medal for 112 years in the men’s competition, Hull and team-mate Catriona Matthew were attempting to win only the second women’s event in the Games. Hull is just three shots behind Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn after finishing three under par, with Matthew on level par after recovering from an early double bogey to shoot 71.

* Rajiv Ouseph was knocked out of the men’s badminton singles in straight games by quarter-final opponent Viktor Axelsen, of Denmark. Ouseph, the 13th seed, went down 21-12 21-16 to an opponent ranked nine places above him.

* Liam Phillips was 10th fastest in the BMX time-trial run, which determined seedings for Thursday’s quarter-finals, while team-mate Kyle Evans was 21st fastest in 35.776.
