When Leeds United were left up all night after shooting down Brighton through Luke Murphy

NOT even four years have passed since Leeds United last played Brighton in a league game.

Having also met six times in the doldrums of League One, the two clubs locked horns 12 times in the Championship before the Seagulls moved onwards and upwards as 2016-17 second tier runners-up.

Whilst not quite proving a nemesis, the south coast side usually got the better of the Whites in the second tier fixtures of the 2010s with eight victories and two draws recorded from 12 games.

Another Seagulls win to add to that tally looked on the cards when the two teams met back in the first game of a new season back in August 2013.

Yet Leeds recorded what was to prove one of only two Championship victories against Brighton in dramatic circumstances as Luke Murphy bagged a stoppage-minute winner in a 2-1 triumph at Elland Road.

Under recently appointed boss Brian McDermott, Leeds were beginning what was a fourth consecutive season in English football’s second tier having been promoted under Simon Grayson as League One runners-up in May 2010.

The Whites then narrowly missed out on making the play-offs the following season in coming seventh but three mid-table finishes of 14th, 13th and 15th had then followed.

Leeds had gone from Grayson to Neil Warnock to McDermott with caretaker boss Neil Redfearn in between.

With former chairman Ken Bates having left the club in the summer, McDermott began what would prove his sole full season in charge with a home clash against Brighton side who had gone close to sealing promotion the previous season under former Whites assistant Gus Poyet in only their second campaign back in the second tier.

Brighton arrived at Elland Road under the care of former Barcelona midfielder Oscar Garcia who had replaced Poyet following the Uruguayan’s dismissal in the summer.

Ashley Barnes, now of Premier League Burnley, also started upfront.

Yet in blazing sunshine it was another Seagulls forward that fired the visitors into the lead with Leonardo Ulloa slamming the ball home past Whites keeper Paddy Kenny from inside the area after latching on to Bruno’s neat through ball from the right flank.

Leeds then drew level just seven minutes after Ulloa’s opener with a fine drive into the bottom right corner from Ross McCormack from just inside the box.

It was to prove the first of 29 goals for McCormack as part of a fantastic campaign individually in what was his last season at the club before departing for Fulham the following summer.

With McCormack having levelled, both sides then had chances to bag a winner with Brighton only denied a second goal through a fine double save from Kenny to keep out first Andrew Crofts and then Inigo Calderon.

Leeds then looked set to bag a winner when substitute Dominic Poleon wriggled free of Gordon Greer and sent a shot towards the top right corner only to be denied by keeper Tomasz Kuscazk and Paul Green then lashed the rebound wide.

In added time, Brighton poured forward and Will Buckley was presented with a free header from six yards out only to see his effort clawed back from under the crossbar by Kenny.

And with seconds remaining, Leeds then ensured they had the last laugh as two summer signings combined to net a dramatic winner.

The towering Matt Smith won a crucial header on the edge of the box to a long ball forwards and fellow new recruit Luke Murphy raced into the area before firing past Kuszczak who could only parry Murphy’s shot into the top right corner.

The perfect start and Leeds began with 11 points out if a possible opening 15 but a dreadful second hand half of the season led to what would prove an all too familiar 15th-placed finish.
