Moseley 12 Yorkshire Carnegie 28: Redpath satisfied with '˜job done' against basement side

Two tries each for summer signings Andy Saull and Andy Forsyth consolidated Carnegie’s place in the top four and pushed Moseley further towards the Championship trapdoor.

Redpath said: “It was a really heavy pitch, there were lots of little bits of water lying around on it so that made it heavy.

“We put in a good shift, we left two or three simple tries out there, one from a forward pass off the restart to take us 14-0 up, but I’m delighted with it, five points, that’s all you can ask for.

“The guys were saying it was heavier out there than it looked, but we’ve worked hard this week, so it’s good that we got the five points.

“We got the four tries, that was great; they scored at the death which made the scoreline closer but it’s job done.

“We’ve got Moseley again next week so we’ll need to re-group for that and go hard at it again because we’ve got Bedford after that as well which is a big game too for us.”

The visitors opened the scoring on four minutes after a sustained spell of pressure.

Former Newcastle Falcons flanker Saull dotted down from a now trademark Carnegie rolling maul and Kevin Sinfield added the extras.

The driving maul is now such a potent attacking threat for Carnegie, it is almost a surprise if they do not score at least once through it during each outing.

The visitors thought they had added their second try straight from the kick off when David Doherty crossed over after a fast break, but the try was ruled out after Harry Leonard’s offload was deemed to be forward.

Redpath’s men did not make their advantage count and were made to pay when Moseley number eight Chris Brightwell found space at the bottom of a ruck to charge over.

It was no less than Kevin Maggs’ men deserved.

They are a side fighting for their Championship lives, and after being thumped at Ealing last week, Moseley had more than held their own with some resolute defence, which stifled Carnegie’s creativity.

But their hard work was undone when quick lineout ball caught their defensive line napping and Sinfield’s offload allowed ex-Sale Sharks centre Forsyth to break through and run over.

The Rhinos legend then added a relatively simple second conversion from underneath the posts to give his side a nine point cushion.

A period of attritional play followed with both sides seeing plenty of the ball on halfway but neither being able to create much.

The sin binning of Greg Charlton for pulling down the maul seemed to shift the momentum to the Yorkshire Carnegie players and kill Moseley’s hopes.

With a man advantage, Yorkshire looked to turn the screw.

A man down, the home side’s defence could only hold out for so long and Saull scored his second try from the back of a rolling maul.

Sinfield then calmly added the two extra points.

The rugby league convert then put a sublime grubber kick round the back of the Moseley defence which released Forsyth for his second try under the posts. It was a move worthy of a bonus point alone.

Sinfield’s last act of the afternoon was to slot over his fourth conversion in front of the posts before being replaced by Joel Hodgson.

Moseley added a consolation score through Bristol loanee George Watkins, converted by Sam Oliver, on the final whistle, but it mattered little.
