Newly-promoted Hunslet Hawks are heading in the right direction, according to player-coach Paul March.
Hawks were beaten 38-16 at Co-op Championship rivals Featherstone Rovers in their opening pre-season game two days ago.
But March said: "We got 80 minutes under our belt and I'm not that bothered about the result.
"It was more about performance and a bit of fitness work. I am pleased with how we went.
"Our main goal is to stay in the Championship this year and the next one's to be pushing for the play-offs.
"Pre-season games are about building towards that – you don't have to win them, you've just got to get your performance right and get some confidence.
"We took a massive step towards that."
Hawks came through with no major injuries, but had Tommy Haughey and
David March yellow- carded following a scuffle.
Paul March said: "The new signings fitted in well and apart from the sin-binnings, we were on a par with them.
"We were down to 11 men for 10 minutes and they scored three tries, which flattered them a bit."
