JPT match report: Tranmere Rovers v Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town took another step closer to Wembley after defeating Tranmere Rovers 2-0 in last night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy northern semi-final.

Striker Jordan Rhodes was the Terriers' hero with goals in either half at Prenton Park.

Lee Clark's Town will now take on League One rivals Carlisle United – last season's beaten finalists – in January, for a place in the final at Wembley.

Although promotion is the priority for Clark this season, he fielded a strong starting XI and was rewarded when Rhodes gave the visitors the lead after 18 minutes.

The striker latched on to a header from fellow forward Alan Lee and beat Rovers keeper Gunnar Nielsen with an excellent lob from outside the area.

Early in the second half Rhodes had a goal disallowed following a foul on Nielsen by Lee, while at the other end, Alex Smithies saved his second penalty in successive games, denying Lateef Elford-Alliyu on 55 minutes.

Rhodes sealed it on 67 minutes when Lee got to the byline and crossed for the striker to rifle home.
