JOCKEY Paul Mulrennan is putting up Marsha and his own mount Final Venture as two viable alternatives to Lady Aurelia and Battaash in today’s Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York (3.35pm).

This week’s Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival holds special memories for Mulrennan who met his wife Adele at the fixture on the Knavesmire.

Mecca’s Angel then gave Mulrennan his first Group One winner when landing the Nunthorpe Stakes in 2015 before following up in the same race 12 months ago.

The jockey’s chances of landing a hat-trick now rest with 40-1 shot Final Venture but Mulrennan says his mount is not without hope in a race in which Wesley Ward’s American speedball Lady Aurelia and the Charles Hills-trained Battaash are vying for favouritism at around 6-4.

Mulrennan said: “My chances of making it three in a row today lie with Final Venture, who isn’t in the same class as Mecca’s but I do think he has a good each-way chance.

“He was second over this course and distance on his penultimate start and this has been the target for some time now.

“Trainer Paul Midgley is very bullish about his chance. He doesn’t have a great draw in 12 but it’s an unusually small field for the Nunthorpe so hopefully it won’t be an issue and 33-1 could be some value.

“If Lady Aurelia turns up in the same form as she did at Royal Ascot, then she will be hard to beat, but I wouldn’t discount Marsha’s chance. She’s a Group One winner, very consistent and will get a nice tow into the race from Take Cover, who is drawn nearby.”

n Paul is sponsored by Racing UK and to celebrate the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, Racing UK is offering the leading horseracing channel at £10 per month (normally £24.98). The offer ends at midnight tonight. Visit www.RacingUK.com/redhot now.
