The 27-year-old from Leeds has been a mainstay of the British circuit for many years but has switched to the fledgling Team Wiggins for 2016 because of the international doors that will open.

But he only made the step up after receiving a helping hand from former Tour de France winner Wiggins.

“I mainly dealt with the team chiefs Simon Cope and Andrew McQuaid over the move, but Brad does have approval over every rider on the team,” said Holohan.

“Ultimately the decision is his as to whether you get the thumbs up or the thumbs down.

“And it’s a massive confidence boost for me to know he’s taken notice and given me the thumbs up.”

Holohan, a climbing specialist who now lives in Shropshire, featured in his home Tour de Yorkshire last year, and as well as returning for that race again next spring, is targeting a spot on the Wiggins team for May’s Tour of California.

“The main reason I moved was the race programme should offer me more opportunities, internationally,” he added.

“Madison Genesis primarily focused on the British Tour Series, which we won this year. But now it’s time to put myself first.
