Yorkshire, 8-1 winners over Durham in their opening match in defence of their Northern Counties Match Week title, reproduced the scoreline against yesterday’s opponents Cumbria.
The champions have a young side playing at Sandiway GC, in Cheshire, but Cumbria fielded an even more youthful line-up, including the county’s 12-year-old champion Caitlin Whitehead.
Jean Waring’s side conceded only a half point in the morning foursomes in a match which saw Cumbria’s Natasha Slater hole in one at the third.
Lightcliffe’s Hannah Holden was unable to achieve the improbable feat of finding the cup with her tee shot for a half.
However, she was unstoppable in the afternoon, winning 6&5. Other Yorkshire winners were Megan Clarke (Cleckheaton) 3&2, Olivia Winning (Rotherham) 2 up, Olivia Hamilton (Cleckheaton) 5&4 and Megan Lockett (Huddersfield) 6&4.
In the other matches, Lancashire beat Northumberland 8.5-0.5 and Cheshire – Yorkshire’s opponents today – got the better of Durham 7.5-1.5.
“Cumbria played extremely well and really stretched our girls, which is what they needed (ahead of playing Cheshire and Lancashire over the next two days),” said Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association President, Heather Cawdry.
“They have got some very good players. Cumbria has only 26 courses in all where Yorkshire has around 190. They were very competitive.”

Foursomes (Cumbria 0.5 Yorkshire 2.5): Caitlin Whitehead and Sarah Cousins lost 4&3 to Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall) and Megan Garland (Selby); Rosie Waller and Tracy Teasdale lost 5&4 to Charlotte Austwick (Fulford) and Holly Morgan (Lees Hall); Natasha Slater and Hannah Smith halved with Hannah Holden (Lightcliffe) and Megan Clarke (Cleckheaton).
