Uzzell has dipped lower each day, shooting 73 70 68, and will hope to continue the trend in the first 72-hole event in the tour’s history.

Jamie Elson (Team Jenahura) leads by one after carding a third-round 68, three under par, to move to six under.

Uzzell went out in one over par before birdieing holes 10 and 12. A bogey at 14 followed, but then he soared up the leaderboard with three consecutive closing birdies.

He lies four off the lead, one in front of Howley Hall’s Marcus Armitage, the first-round leader and winner of last week’s Tree of Life Championship.

Armitage suffered two damaging sevens in his last three holes and is in a tie for eighth (66 72 74).

He was three under for his round through 13 holes, but bogeyed 15, had a triple bogey at the 384-yard par-4 16th and a double at the 568-yard par-5 closing hole.

He is alongside Doncaster’s Graeme Clark (70 72 70) who bookended three consecutive birdies from the second with bogeys at one and five.

Further strokes were dropped at 10 and 11 which he retrieved with birdies at 15 and 17.

Malton & Norton’s Chris Halley (71 67 75) was tied in second place after 36 holes with Armitage, but could only find one birdie all day while amassing five bogeys.

Oulton Hall’s Daniel Gavins (72 72 73) and Middlesbrough’s Michael Skelton (71 71 75) are in a tie for 38th place.

Gavins had three birdies in his round, but also five bogeys.

Skelton started well with birdies at both the second and third before stumbling to bogeys at holes four, six and eight.

Coming home he had one birdie and successive double bogeys at 15 and 16.

Six birdies in his round propelled Elson to the top of the leaderboard, but dropped shots at the sixth, 11th and 13th meant the field remained in touch with the 34-year-old.
