Moortown next step on the road to St Andrews

MOORTOWN stages one of 13 Regional Qualifying events for next month’s Open Championship on Monday where 105 players will vie for a spot in the penultimate stage of qualification for next month’s championship at St Andrews.

One third of Moortown’s participants are amateurs, six of whom will move down to Nottinghamshire on Wednesday to contest England Golf’s Brabazon Trophy.

William Whiteoak (Shipley), Jamie Bower (Meltham) Jonathan Thomson (Lindrick), Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall), Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay), and Martin Brown (Pike Hills) will have their focus on Moortown today before shifting it to Notts (Hollinwell) for English golf’s 72-hole amateur stroke play championship.

Yorkshire Union will have other representatives today at Moortown in Joe Dean (Lindrick), Olive White (Pannal), Martin Brown (Pike Hills), Jordan Perry (Phoenix), Julian Taylor (York), Steve Robins (Hull), Simon Coumbe (Pontefract), Ross Mackay (Lees Hall), David Houlding (Moortown), Craig Bradley (Garforth), Tom Irwin (Alwoodley), Damon Coulson (Fulford), Luke Robinson (Hornsea) and James Walker (The Oaks).

The 70 professionals hunting the ultimate prize of a place at the Open number many from Yorkshire including the host club’s Nick McCarthy.

​The number of places available into Final Qualifying from each Regional Qualifying event will be confirmed once play is underway at all Regional Qualifying venues on Monday.

Final qualifying in Scotland eight days later will involve four courses when a mere12 places in total will be on offer at St Andrews, which stages the 144th Open from July 16-19.
