Gavins had four birdies in his last-round 68 to add to his earlier scores of 66 69 as Kirkhill’s Craig Ross took victory and the £10,000 first prize by three shots.

Moortown’s Nick McCarthy closed with a 68, his best round of the week, after previously carding 69 71 and tied 22nd.

McCarthy finished a shot ahead of Hillsborough’s Joe Dean, the former English amateur champion, whose scores of 70 67 72 gave him a tie for 25th spot.

Dean lies fourth in the Order of Merit with winnings of £12,523 as he and his fellow EuroPro Tour members chase one of the Challenge Tour cards that will go to the season’s top five.

Wheatley’s Kealan Lowe (66 73 74) and Hallowes’ Adam Hodkinson (68 71 74) were in a share for 39th place with former English stroke play champion Jamie Bower (Meltham) tied 45th (71 69 74).

Gavins has climbed 13 places to 17th place in the Order of Merit that is headed by Longridge’s Mark Young, twice a winner this year.

Moor Allerton champion Ross now has a win to his name as a professional on the EuroPro Tour, adding to his amateur victory back in 2014 in the Glenfarclas Open at Mar Hall.

He said: “It feels amazing; I’m so thankful that I won.

“I felt like I had the tournament in my control for the most part. I was hitting it really well and just kept plugging away at my own game as I knew the scoring opportunities would appear.

“To get a professional win so quickly into my career will help my confidence and game improve; the £10,000 cheque is a nice little bonus too.”
