Yorkshire clubs spend over £11million on agent fees in one year

Football clubs in Yorkshire spent millions of pounds on agents for signing players during the last year, figures reveal.

The payments made to agents/intermediaries between February 1, 2017 and January 31, 2018 from the ten Yorkshire clubs came to a total of £11.3m.

The biggest spenders in our region were Middlesbrough who splashed out £2,538,840.

That figure, the fourth-highest in the Championship behind Aston Villa, Sunderland and Reading, surpassed the total spent by Premier League side Huddersfield.

The Terriers spent the least amount on agent fees in the top flight - £2,465,815 - and were dwarfed by Liverpool, who shelled out over £26.8m.

In the Championship, Hull City spent just under £1.9m and Sheffield Wednesday just over £1.7m.

Sheffield United, fresh from winning the League One title, spent just over £650,000 - around half of Leeds United's outlay of £1.35m - whilst Barnsley's figure was a shade under £420,000.

The lowest spenders on agent fees within the Broad Acres was Doncaster Rovers who laid out just £61,832 in a year when they were promoted up to League One.

Their divisional rivals Rotherham, perched in the lofty position of fourth, spent £136,046 whilst Bradford City shelled out just over £100,000.

English clubs across the top five divisions spent £257m on agent fees, representing an increase of £37m from the previous year.
