Yorkshire Amateur League: Woodwork comes to Drig's rescue

Goals from Chris Lee and Shane Sowden had Drig 2-0 up by the hour mark but Calverley rallied and a Dale Spink cross found leading scorer Matty Wilson to reduce the deficit.

Wilson then volleyed home an equaliser but Joe Hirst fired home the decisive fifth goal for Drig before Calverley were denied by the crossbar at the death.

Unbeaten leaders Farsley were not in action and Celtic’s lead is now down to a point but Juniors have a game in hand and a plus 10 better goal difference.

Third-placed Grangefield Old Boys, who have also played one game more, also moved one point behind leaders Farsley with a 4-1 success at second-bottom Stanningley Old Boys.

A Chris Cairns header and a toe poke past the keeper by Luke Hunter gave Grangefield a 2-0 interval lead.

Patient Grangefield added a third when Matt Tomlinson finished off some excellent approach work with a Chris Barr cross from the left then slotted home by a Stanningley defender but Grangefield did concede a disputed penalty converted by John Ward.

Leeds Medics & Dentists rose to fourth by outscoring sixth-placed visitors Athletico 6-3 with Medics 5-1 up at the break.

Colm Hicks bagged a treble for Medics whose Brad Chambers added a brace with Alex Dyer also netting. Athletico struck through Adil Tanvir, Touseff Gulraiz and a Sammy Bzeu own goal.

Three games were played in the Championship with leaders Gildersome Spurs Old Boys moving four points clear through a 4-1 verdict at third-bottom Leeds Independent.

Indy led when Marlon Richards played a ball into Damon Jenkinson who finished into the top corner.

Gildersome, though, roared back through a Matt Jackson hat-trick and Josh Suggett strike.

Shire Academics moved second with a 4-1 triumph at home to fourth-bottom Leeds Medics & Dentists Reserves.

Medics led 1-0 at the interval but second-half goals from Alex Cookson, Jordan Talbot, sub Alex McDonald and Sam Lyons turned the game on its head.

Second-bottom Mount St Mary’s and visiting Beeston St Anthony also shared a goalless draw.

Several Yorkshire Amateur League teams were in second-round Yorkshire Old Boys’ Shield action.

St Bedes – giant-killers in the last round – continued their adventure in the Yorkshire Old Boys’ Shield with a 3-2 success at home to East Riding County League First Division side Bilton.

Championship outfit Bedes trailed early but an Alex Green shot was fumbled by the Bilton keeper and Jermaine Moyce was on hand to level matters.

Green then went on a solo run and dinked over the keeper to put Bedes 2-1 up before Moyce grabbed his second meaning a second Bilton response proved only a consolation.

Bedes will now visit Championship colleagues Leeds City Old Boys in the quarter-finals after City obliged 4-0 at home to Humber Premier Division side Howden as Josh Standley, Ali Lewis, Mark Dixon and Marc Ware all bagged a goal each.

Stanley United progressed after battling it out with Premier Division rivals Alwoodley as they ran out 3-1 victors away from home.

Stanley took an early lead through Joe Childs but Alwoodley hit back and levelled just before the break. Second-half goals from Joe Childs and Stephen Bettley gave Stanley their ticket to the quarter-finals.

Another Premier Division side in Horsforth St Margaret’s won 4-0 at home to Garforth Crusaders thanks to a James Watson hat-trick and Laurence Patterson strike. Horsforth will travel to Stanley United in the quarter-final.

Division Three outfit New Middleton bowed out with a 5-4 loss at home to AAK from the East Riding County League Division Three.

New Middleton, who had won eight games out of eight in Division Three prior to the tie, and were 3-1 at half-time through a Jamie Davies strike and Danny Harrison brace in a game in which Middleton’s Liam Mudd was sent off.

Championship outfit Morley Town were beaten 4-1 by eighth-placed North Riding Premier Division club Redcar Newmarket. The Morley goal emanated from Nathaniel Hazell.

In a delayed first-round tie, Ealandians came a cropper 2-0 at home to St Mary’s 1947 from the North Riding League.
