Yorkshire Amateur League: Six-goal Drig' seize the day against Stanley

Drighlington seized the initiative at the top of the Yorkshire Amateur Premier Division with a 6-3 win over second-placed Stanley United, writes TOM HARLE.

Three first-half goals from Sam Thorpe, Ryan Rhodes and Chris Lee helped take them to within a win of Stanley with three games in hand.

Despite goals from Stuart Davies and top scorer Josh Whiteley, the former West Yorkshire League side failed to cut the deficit before Leroy Watson’s late strike.

Athletico continued their promising debut season in the top flight with a 6-5 defeat of Morley Town at Batley Sports Centre. Morley, now third bottom with only Saturday’s opponents conceding more goals, only trailed in the 88th minute thanks to Mohammed Ikraam’s late stunner.

In the Championship, St Bede’s sealed a third win in four by beating basement boys Wortley 3-1 at Southfield Grange. Ian Horrocks bagged a brace within four first-half minutes and Jermaine Moyce tapped home a rebound.

Second-placed Horsforth St Margaret’s took the spoils in a fine contest with Collingham Juniors that they won 4-3 at Harewood Road. The hosts went in 2-0 up at the break, Richard Gouland and Richard Metcalfe on target, before Sam Tuck retained the cushion – making it 3-1 after Horsforth struck back. But James Watson and Callum Walker completed a second-half surge inflicting a third-successive defeat on Collingham.

Relegation candidates Leeds Medics Reserves were beaten soundly 3-0 by Mount St Mary’s with a double from Tom Hammill and a Pat Gibbon penalty.

In the West Riding County Amateur League, Route One Rovers missed the chance to close in on Premier leaders Salts in a 3-3 draw at home to Littletown, who actually went into the break 1-0 up, writes THOMAS RITCHIE.

Wibsey solidified their top-half position as they hammered DRAM Community 7-2. Simon Sewell and Lee Smith were both on fire as they struck hat-tricks.

Lower Hopton moved ninth, level on points with Thornton United who they dismantled 5-1 away from home, Daniel Ryan and Dale Hanson amongst the visitors’ scorers.
