Yorkshire Amateur League: Formbook is turned on its head by Wigton

Wigton Moor, who sit bottom of the Premier Division having won just one league game all season, came from behind to beat the Medics 3-1.

A good finish from John Forrest early in the game seemed to have set Medics on the way to the semi-finals only for Danny McGill to equalise for Wigton 10 minutes later.

Leeds Medics were then punished for defensive errors; Danny Ashton pounced to put Wigton ahead on the stroke of half-time interval while Chris Lone added a third after the hour mark.

Medics hit the woodwork three times and saw an effort cleared off the line but Wigton were victorious, booking their place in the final four where they will play Stanningley.

In the other quarter-final tie, Premier Division league leaders Farsley Celtic Juniors proved too strong for Rodillian as they ran out 1-0 winners.

Danny Lyons scored the only goal of the game for Celtic, taking his tally to 21 for the season, with Farnley Sports their opponents in the next round.

In the Premier Division, Ealandians fought from 3-0 down to win 4-3 away at Farnley Sports to keep their title hopes alive.

Farnley raced into the lead with Andy Punter scoring a brace with Barry Danby also on target.

Ealandians put the pressure on and despite missing a penalty, cut the deficit to just one goal at the half-time break.

But Farnley’s lead soon disappeared as Josh Hans and Glyn Haley were the heroes for Ealandians scoring two goals each.

Meanwhile, Alwoodley took a big step away from the relegation places with a comfortable 5-1 win at home to Stanningley.

Dino Mulavdic, Geoff Clarkson (2), Tom Rawson and Graham Shaw all got on the scoresheet for Alwoodley while James Allen scored a consolation goal late on.

Trinity and Grangefield shared the points in a 1-1 draw with a point still separating the sides in the mid-table.

Tyler Gill fired Grangefield in front after just five minutes before Stevie Travers brought Trinity level after ten minutes.

In the Championship, St Nicholas remain title favourites as they won 2-0 away at fourth placed Beeston St Anthony’s with Parandeep Singh and Roy Frazer scoring for the visitors.

They are two points behind the leaders but have four games in hand over leaders Beeston Juniors.

Leeds Medics and Dentists Reserves remain three points off the leaders in third as they beat Shire Academics 1-0, Chris Pickering scoring the only goal of the game. Elsewhere, Stanningley picked up their third league win of the season as they beat fellow strugglers Old Batelians 6-3.

Stanningley remain in the bottom two, one point behind Old Batelians who have lost all of their last five league games.

Meanwhile, Morley Town moved level on points on the league ladder with Collingham Juniors as they triumphed 5-0 at home with Marc Haley, Ryan O’Donnell, Kevin Mackay (2) and Jovan Kioseff all on target for the hosts.

Division Three side Ealandians Reserves booked their place in the Hancock Cup final as they beat Championship outfit Alwoodley Reserves after extra-time.

Ealandians led 2-0 at the interval as goals from Paulo Williams and Ollie McEwan gave them the lead, only for Alwoodley to fight back and draw level with a penalty from Hassan Abrar and a free-kick from Kamil Piekara.

Level after 90 minutes, McEwan restored Ealandians’ lead before acting the provider, setting up Paul Friend to make the score 4-2 in extra-time.

Abrar scored from the penalty spot once more for Alwoodley but they couldn’t draw level, George Haigh-Gill on target for Ealandians to seal a 5-3 win.

In Division One, Drighlington remain unbeaten and kept the pressure on the league leaders as they won 9-2 away at St. Bedes with Shane Sowden scoring four goals for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Calverley United remain top with a slender 1-0 win away at Grangefield, Rob Nicholson the goalscorer.

Wortley are unbeaten in their last four and climbed away from the relegation spots as they won 3-1 away at Rothwell Reserves.

Elsewhere, Kean Varley scored four as Garforth Rangers swamped lowly Wheelwright 7-0 while basement club Colton Athletic were beaten 3-2 by Amaranth.

In Division Two, Woodkirk Valley’s promotion dreams have been shattered as they lost their fourth consecutive game, beaten 4-0 by Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves.

Sam Ford, Alex Gyte and Steve Wells were all on target for Celtic who are unbeaten in the league and have dropped just two points in their 13 games this campaign.

Gildersome Spurs remain top, extending their winning streak to six games, as they won 8-1 away at Morley Town Reserves with Ben Keedy scoring four of Spurs’ goals.

In the battle for promotion, Churwell Lions defeated Huddersfield YMCA 3-1 while struggling Old Centralians got a morale boost with a 5-2 win over basement club Old Batelians Reserves.

Leeds Medics & Dentists IV remain in the bottom two after a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sandal Wanderers.
