YEP Jury: Big win predicted for Leeds United on last day to offset season's big disappointments

With little to cheer from a hugely disappointing Leeds United campaign, the Yorkshire Evening Post's fans' jury is, understandably, hoping for a win against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday to send them into the summer with '“ at least the hint of '“ a smile on their faces.

But while most are predicting victory over the Hoops – some by a pretty wide margin – one reckons the boot will be on the other foot. See if you agree:

The Championship all finally comes to an end on Sunday – Leeds United versus Queens Park Rangers in front of another 30,000 crowd.

You would be hard pressed to say that the club or the players deserve such great support after a shambolic, unforgivable second half of the 2017/18 season.

I attended the premiere of the excellent ‘Leeds United stories’ film on Wednesday night and it was lovely to be reminded of our last trophy-winning side, the former greatness of our academy, the humility of Lucas Radebe and the explosive talent of Tony Yeboah.

If I see Kemar Roofe, Jay-Roy Grot and Pierre-Michel Lasogga meandering around aimlessly or Samuel Saiz, Gjanni Alioski and Pontus Jansson having a tantrum on Sunday, I’ll just think back to those days and remember what the club should and could be.

In the meantime, chalk up another defeat and (hopefully) the final straw for Paul Heckingbottom.

Let’s get a proper manager in for 2018/2019.

Prediction: Leeds United 1 QPR 3.

So, we come to the final game of the season. In August we dreamed this would be the year we’d be at this game celebrating a return to the Premier League but it will feel much like any other final game of the past six seasons; nothing at stake, nothing to celebrate and wondering if we’ll have yet another new head coach come next August.

I have still enjoyed the season, such as it was, and there have been some great moments to lock away in our memories for our dotage. There was that nine-game unbeaten run to start the season with hat-tricks for Samuel Saiz and Kemar Roofe, that amazing finale at Turf Moor with three goals in 17 minutes and a victorious penalty shoot-out, a 3-0 win at Ashton Gate that no one saw coming, Pablo Hernandez’s free-kick at Leicester, another Roofe hat-trick in the reverse fixture against QPR, and that amazing 17-minute spell at the start of the second half against Millwall at Elland Road.

OK, not many reasons to be cheerful since then but still, it wasn’t all bad!

QPR have not travelled well this season having lost 13 on the road and they scored only six times in those games.

More in hope than expectation I’m going for a Leeds win.

Prediction: Leeds United 3 QPR 0.

Well it’s here. The 46th game of the 2017/18 season and I won’t be the only one glad to see the end of another miserable campaign.

It started so well but, like most seasons (except a couple since promotion from Division One), it’s ended disappointingly to say the least. Fans need to realise quickly that Leeds are a mid-table Championship team with a wage structure that is kept to a level Andrea Radrizzani sees as sensible and financially viable. Unless he changes his approach and ‘pushes the boat out’ it is hard to see Leeds getting any nearer challenging to get out of this tough division.

I do hope I’m wrong because this club needs the Premier League and its fans deserve it too for their continued support. Their loyalty has been pushed too far, too long. One day, whoever is in charge may find they turn their backs on the club and stop attending games.

QPR visit on Sunday for the right to finish 14th. The Hoops have had a poor season but, as Ian Holloway is their manager, they will come to Leeds wanting to finish the season with a win.

It will be interesting to see how many fans stay behind to give the players applause after the game finishes.

I’ve not decided to stay or find refuge in a local pub to drown my sorrows.

Hopefully, the players can give the fans something to cheer before they go on their holidays. Some might not appear in a Leeds shirt again and some I’ll not miss.

Paul Heckingbottom will also hope he’s done enough in the games he’s had as head coach to justify keeping his position. Fans are split on this.

Many haven’t seen enough from the South Yorkshireman to warrant this (I’m one of them!) but others think he should be given at least one transfer window to bring in players he thinks will improve the squad. What is certain is that it looks like being a busy summer with quite a few of the under achievers of this season being moved out of the club and trying to encourage more quality players into the club.

Prediction: Leeds United 2 QPR 1.

SHAUN SMITH

Low-profile QPR roll up to Elland Road on Sunday.

The Hoops still face a fine of £40m for breaches of Financial Fair Play committed during their promotion in 2014. The case is under appeal but, so far, they haven’t paid a penny. Perhaps such a quiet key league campaign is their way of hoping no one will notice.

Leeds wind up their disappointing term before jetting out to Myanmar. CEO Angus Kinnear says the squad is excited about the trip but, hopefully, the players will not do themselves a mischief in their enthusiasm to book their seat on the plane. An injury now would be the last thing they would want. Owner Andrea Radrizzani is in the spotlight, having made a big broadcast rights deal and one wonders if the world’s media will make a big deal about the trip to a country which is under huge political scrutiny

Sport and politics should never mix, so on to the football and a prediction for the game – Paul Heckingbottom is a man under huge scrutiny and he will be wanting to end the season on a high.

That – and QPR’s apparent quest for anonymity – suggests that a Leeds win is on the cards and a big one at that.

Prediction: Leeds United 4 QPR 0.

After the Norwich game, the fans stayed behind for the traditional ‘lap of recognition’ as it was described.

It is not difficult to recall a number of these occasions at Elland Road when the overwhelming feeling was one of embarrassment. On Sunday we will be saying good riddance to the dying season and it is very difficult to predict what the mood of the fans will be.

Of course, the result will have some bearing on the atmosphere and it is as good a reason as any to hope that the Whites can bring the curtain down with a win.

Back in December, United visited Loftus Road, having beaten Barnsley and having drawn with Villa. It was the mid-point of a six-match unbeaten run which was to crash and burn at Birmingham City as 2017 came to a close. Kemar Roofe obliged with a hat-trick and Ian Holloway made one of his mysterious cryptic statements after the match.

This Sunday who knows? But I’m sure that Holloway will have something totally irrelevant to say about it!

Prediction: Leeds United 2 QPR 1.
