Women's Football: '˜Walk in the park' takes Miners to the top of the table

The hosts are two points clear of Ossett Town in the table after their victory.

For all their pressure and ball possession, only a Katy Dewrow penalty separated the teams at half-time. Nikki Grayson won the player of match accolades after providing three assists in the second period for Sarah Heckler, Vicky Gosney and Kelsey Stones.

Avenue attempted to stage a comeback midway through the second half and began to get a foothold in the game, with Laura Wilkinson and Sarah Huby both having chances.

Avenue’s Katie Dormer y broke free cleverly and smashed a first-time shot past the stranded Hemsworth goalkeeper, only for the ball to strike the upright and fall into the grateful stopper’s arms.

Ossett Town moved up to second after thrashing AFC Gledhow 9-0 at Springmill, thanks to a four-goal haul from Caroline Omboyi and a hat-trick from Dani Sidebottom.

Depleted Brighouse Athletic, in fourth, and third-placed Tingley shared the points in a 0-0 draw.

Altofts moved up to fourth after beating Hepworth 2-1 at home.

Battyeford Firsts pulled off a stunning comeback in their First Division game against Hebden Royd United, rallying from 3-0 down to eventually win 6-3. Victory moves them six points clear at the top of the table.

Farsley Celtic were knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the West Riding League Cup by Bradford City A as they won 3-2.

Wakefield’s winless streak continued as they struggle at the bottom of the North East Premier League.

It has now been 11 games since Wakefield secured all three points, meaning they stay second-to-bottom in the table on just nine points.

They suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat at home to eighth-placed Sheffield Community Ladies.

Castleford White Rose are still to win a game this season and they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at home against promotion chasing York City.
