Women's Football: Freescoring Vixens find the winning habit hard to lose

Much has changed since Guiseley Vixens' last home outing in the Premier League Northern Division One back in October, with the Vixens moving down to second place with not many games left to catch up on, writes CONNOR-CRAIG JACKSON.

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is their winning form, as they proved too strong for visitors Blackpool Wren Rovers, beating them 4-0.

Liv Thackeray broke the deadlock just after the hour mark with two goals in four minutes, before Sarah Danby and Charlie Blythe added extra gloss to the win.

Brighouse Town sealed the perfect addition to manager Rob Mitchell’s Premier League Manager of the Month Award, edging out Liverpool Feds 1-0.

A game of fine margins saw a defensive mistake provide the opening for top scorer Jodie Redgrave, who once again proved her quality on the ball with a 35-yard lob that sealed Town’s third successive league win.

Elsewhere a real thriller saw Leeds end up on the wrong end, with four goals not enough to take anything from their 7-4 loss at Morecambe, who now leapfrog Leeds in the table to fifth.

A mixture of cup games and torrid weather conditions saw only two league fixtures take place throughout the West Riding divisions.

There were still plenty of goals however, as the Premier Division saw Ossett Town trounce Battyeford Firsts 5-1 through Jade Mullins’ hat-trick, along with goals from Caroline Omboyi and Danielle Sidebottom.

Elsewhere Ripon City Panthers cemented their place at the third division summit with one game left to play, seeing off Lower Hopton 4-1.

The League Shield final is now all set after Hemsworth Miners Welfare advanced safely through the semi-finals by beating third-division Ilkley Town 3-1.

Hemsworth will face a tough task in the final after Premier Division leaders Leeds Medics and Dentists battered first division Farsley Celtic Reserves 5-1.

Becky Preston, Vicky Palin, Helen Molloy, Kellyn Arnold and Brittany Hope Staniforth grabbed the goals.

All Supplementary Cup groups are now under way after second-division Leeds City held on to gain a 1-0 scalp over First Division opponents Republica Internationale in the Eastern Group.

Meanwhile the rest of the games went firmly by the form book after First Division Wetherby Athletic won 5-2 at Second Division Boroughbridge in the Northern Group, whilst the Western group saw Second Division Farsley Celtic Development prove too strong for third-division New Farnley in a 4-1 home win.
