Will Huffer reflects on Leeds United debut that gave him Elland Road 'goosebumps'

The 20-year-old goalkeeper, who is from York, has represented England at Under-17 and Under-18 level before being included in Paul Simpson's Under-20s squad in recent months but had never made a senior appearance for United until yesterday.

The young stopper played a starring role for England Under-17s in 2015 as he stepped off the bench in the dying moments of their World Cup play-off against Spain due to an injury to first choice Paul Woolston with Huffer going on to save the penalty that sent the Young Lions to the showpiece event in Chile the following October.

United's academy product was called upon following an injury crisis at Thorp Arch which saw Jamal Blackman and first choice stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell sidelined with respective injuries just days apart.

Marcelo Bielsa opted for Huffer over his counterpart Kamil Miazek and it appeared to be the right choice as the young Englishman kept a clean sheet as he helped United to three Championship points on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m lost for words, it was great,” he told LUTV following the game.

“It couldn’t have gone any better. I got goosebumps walking onto the pitch, I get goosebumps just sat in the stands when ‘Marching On Together’ comes on, so to just walk out was an absolute dream come true.

“There’s nothing like it. I joined the club when I was eight so I just want to pay a big thanks to all the coaches that have got me here to be honest.”
