Coyle, who spent the whole of last season at Highbury Stadium, has returned to Fleetwood on a six-month deal until January 6 and said Barton’s plans for the season ahead meant the transfer “made sense to me”.

Barton, the former England international, secured his first job in management when Fleetwood appointed him on a three-year contract at the start of this month.

The League One club are expected to push for promotion next term having made the play-offs under Uwe Rosler in 2017 and Coyle joined Barton’s squad yesterday morning, in time for the early stages of pre-season.

The 22-year-old impressed at Fleetwood during his previous loan, winning two player-of-the-year awards, but was expected to come back to Leeds and compete for a place this summer having made sporadic appearances for the club since he stepped up from their academy.

New head coach Marcelo Bielsa, however, has allowed him to rejoin Fleetwood in a deal which will guarantee the right-back regular football.

Coyle said: “I spoke with Joey a couple of times in the off season. He just said about his keenness to get me back at the club and that was a massive influence.

“I signed here last year so I know what the club’s about. Hearing about the plans for this season, it all came together and made sense for me to come back.”

Leeds, meanwhile, have handed a new one-year deal to academy goalkeeper Kamil Miazek.

The 21-year-old Pole, who joined the club on a short-term basis last season after a successful trial, is now tied down to the club until the summer of 2019.

The former Feyenoord youngster played seven times for Leeds’ Under-23s.
