Key Battle - Caleb Ekuban v John O’Shea

Paul Heckingbottom seems to like Ekuban and the United boss has stuck with the striker despite a string of missed chances in the past month. Sunderland’s defence is unbelievably brittle - 71 concessions and counting in the Championship with six games to go - and they are particularly vulnerable to set-pieces and crosses into their box. Ekuban needs another goal and Sunderland might be the right team at the right time.

Key Man - Aiden McGeady

No-one at Sunderland will be taking anything from this season, and it is remarkable to think that a player like McGeady is headed for League One, but there are far worse numbers than his in the squad at the Stadium of Light. Four goals and seven assists is a pretty reasonable return and while credit is in short supply, the finger of blame for Sunderland’s demise should probably be pointed elsewhere.

Quite simply, a game Leeds have to win. Twenty one teams have beaten Sunderland already and there is no way out of the trouble Chris Coleman’s side are in. Forget the notion of Sunderland having experienced players, or the fact that they trounced Derby County last week. Having won two games in 2018, United will be in meltdown territory if they fail to do the business against a doomed club in front of their own crowd.
