Key Battle - Samuel Saiz v Gary Gardner

Gardner, the former Aston Villa midfielder, is likely to lie deep and act as an extra line of defence in front of Barnsley’s back five. Leeds can expect to see plenty of possession but Saiz in particular must find a way of finding the cutting edge which the club have lacked so badly in the second half of this season. United don’t struggle to get into good positions. They simply struggle to do anything once they get there.

Key Man - Oli McBurnie

The Scotland international was signed by Paul Heckingbottom in January, prior to Heckingbottom leaving Oakwell for Leeds, and Barnsley have been hugely grateful for his presence. McBurnie has scored eight league goals in 13 appearances, including a vital equaliser against Bolton last weekend, and enhanced his reputation accordingly. He will not be playing in a Championship relegation battle next season.

Phil Hay’s Verdict:

Leeds, again, have the issue of competitive motivation to contend with. Barnsley need points urgently. United’s season has been over for longer than anyone can remember. That might influence the outcome at Elland Road but Leeds are on a hiding to nothing if they lose this. Barnsley’s record shows 20 defeats and eight wins. They have been in trouble all season. Heckingbottom can’t afford for tomorrow’s derby to go wrong.

Team news...

Leeds will still be without Eunan O'Kane (groin), Matthew Pennington (calf), Adam Forshaw (calf), Liam Cooper (torn thigh muscle), Laurens De Bock (hamstring), Luke Ayling (ankle), Conor Shaughnessy (ankle) and Tyler Roberts (shin) due to injury. Pontus Jansson is expected to return after leaving the field with a concussion symptoms in the 3-1 defeat to Preston. Gaetano Berardi will also miss the rest of the season due to five-match suspension following his red card against Sunderland.
