As part of just five surviving games across the top three divisions, Horbury’s 2-1 win against Knaresborough Town on Saturday was enough to keep the outfit up in fifth spot in the Premier Division.

Boss Dean Mountain stressed the importance of the victory and insists that they won’t stop there as they aim to finish as high as possible.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to win at least one trophy and finish in the top four of the league,” said Mountain.

“That hasn’t changed.

“We have the ability and determination to do so – on our day we can compete with anyone. I’m really pleased with our league season so far to be honest; we’ve done ourselves proud. It’s great to see how far the team and the club have come in the last few seasons.

“We keep pushing on now because we want to be up there year-on-year with the likes of the regular top teams, Field, Beeston and Leeds City. I’m not surprised at how well we’re doing though because we did well last year and have added some good players before and during this season.

“We know how tough this league is but believe we can compete with the top dogs, we just need that extra level of consistency now.”

Knaresborough, who sit at the foot of the Premier with just one win to their name all season, caught everyone off-guard when they opened the scoring through Mathew Pascal and entered the interval with the advantage.

Lee Geraghty was the one to equalise before Neil Samardzija came off the bench to wrap up a 2-1 win.

“Knaresborough brought a much-changed and improved side and could easily have got a result, especially in the first half,” Mountain added. “We were trailing at the hour mark but had enough left in the tank to get the victory in the end.”

“The league is always going to be important to us but we are also trying to win the Wakefield District Cup for a third successive year which would be a great achievement.”

Also in action in the Premier Division, Leeds City maintained their spot in fourth place after beating Hunslet Club 4-1.

Goals from Adam Dutson, Jamie Thomson, with a double, and Joe Tasker cancelled out Liam Moore’s effort for Hunslet.

Sherburn White Rose stole the limelight in Division One as they ran away 5-1 winners against Ripon City.

Joe Dalton’s effort for City was a consolation as Aaron Hodgson’s hat-trick accompanied goals from Arran Hudson and Danny Middleton to steal the spoils.

Another fixture heavy with goals was Thornhill’s clash with Kippax which saw the latter succumb to a 5-4 scoreline.

Timothy Clarke, with a brace, Robert Evans, Sean Housecroft and Shaun McDaid all scored for Thornhill to secure the win.

Over in Division Two, Barwick v Ossett Common Rovers was the only fixture to be played and it didn’t disappoint with Ossett running away impressive 7-2 winners.

Sam Sweeny stole the show bagging four goals to accompany Richard Ryan’s brace while Andy Jowett also etched his name onto the scoresheet to put victorious Rovers in seventh heaven.
