Wakefield Sunday League: Miners' steely resolve nets team first piece of silverware

First-time cup winners hemsworth Miners Welfare needed penalties to defeat New Sharlston Welfare in a thrilling Premiership One League Cup final, writes James Field.

An end-to-end encounter needed extra time with the sides locked at 2-2 following a double from New Sharlston’s Joe Colley and goals from man of the match Lee Carrington and Josh Barret for Hemsworth. Sharlston took the lead through Scott Ellam in extra time only for Andy Gibson to produce a late strike to take the game to penalties. Craig Conway converted the decisive penalty to give Hemsworth a superb 4-2 win on penalties.

Elsewhere, Stanley United ran out deserved 3-1 winners in the President’s Cup final against Championship One title rivals Ossett Central. With the scores level at 1-1 early in the second half after goals from Ash Downing and Joe Turfery, Joe Whiteley supplied two goals to earn United a maiden Presidents Cup success.

In Premiership One, Wakefield Football Centre boosted their survival hopes with two 3-1 wins in a week over Shephards Arms and Wrenthrope Rangers whilst fellow strugglers Peacock FC where hammered 9-1 at home to Woodman Sports Club.

Premiership Two saw champions Horse & Jockey pull off a stunning 5-4 win away at Wakefield Athletic. Meanwhile, the lower end of the table meeting between Henry Boons and Hemsworth Highfield saw Hemsworth pull off a surprise 4-2 away victory.

Earlier in the week Ossett Central and Stanley United cemented their title ambitions, before the weekends cup final, with comprehensive away wins 6-0 and 5-0 respectively at Wakefield Athletic and Crofton Colts.

In Championship Two, AFC Bar Street slumped to two defeats in a week with defeats away at Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves and Grey Horse AFC.
